Home / Safety Management / Heavy Vehicle Accreditation
From module compliance to whole-of-business safety management.
Since 1 August 2026, Australia’s National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (NHVAS) has been transitioning to the new Heavy Vehicle Accreditation (HVA) framework. It’s the biggest change to heavy vehicle accreditation in decades, and it changes more than the name on the certificate. Instead of auditing individual modules like Mass, Maintenance and Fatigue in isolation, HVA assesses how your entire business manages safety, through a single, integrated Safety Management System (SMS). Existing NHVAS accreditation remain valid until they expire, but every operator will eventually need to meet the new standard. Businesses that start preparing now give themselves the best chance of transitioning smoothly, without last-minute scrambles or audit surprises.
A full-service transition partner
AuditCo is a full-service audit, inspection, and compliance readiness provider, and we’re already helping Australian transport operators get in front of the shift from NHVAS to HVA.
With over 100 years of combined experience across our team of qualified auditors, we bring practical, on-the-ground expertise to every engagement, from single-vehicle operators through to national fleets running Higher Mass Limit and PBS combinations. Our auditors are strategically located in every major city and region across Australia, so we can mobilise where and when you need us, at the pace of your business, not a call centre queue.
We don’t hand you a generic template and wish you luck. We understand transport operations, the pressures of keeping trucks moving while paperwork catches up, and what a genuine, workable Safety Management System actually looks like on a busy fleet. We work alongside your team to make the transition to HVA a practical, achievable project, not a compliance headache.
A structured review of your current NHVAS documentation and practices against the new HVA requirements. We tell you exactly where you already meet the standard, where restructuring is needed, and where genuine gaps exist, so you know precisely what the transition involves before you commit resources to it.
HVA is built around a single, documented Safety Management System covering your entire operation. We assess your existing procedures, most operators already have many of the building blocks, and help you restructure and document them into an SMS that satisfies HVA's requirements and genuinely reflects how your business operates.
An independent internal audit of your operation before your official HVA accreditation audit. We identify improvement opportunities while there's still time to act on them, so nothing catches you out on the day that matters.
Independent, third-party HVA accreditation auditing delivered by experienced transport compliance professionals who understand both the regulatory standard and the operational realities of running heavy vehicles.
GSA is the mandatory foundation every operator must achieve under HVA. From there, many businesses will also pursue optional ACA accreditation for Mass, Fatigue, or Maintenance to unlock benefits like higher mass limits, PBS concessions, and fatigue flexibility. We help you determine which ACA modules are worth pursuing and prepare you for both.
Accreditation isn't a one-off event. We help your business maintain its Safety Management System, stay ahead of regulatory changes, and keep your accreditation in good standing long after the transition is complete.
The transition period runs through to 2029, but the businesses that leave it late are the ones who end up rebuilding their entire compliance system under time pressure, with an audit already booked. The businesses that start early get something far more valuable: time. Time to review a Safety Management System properly, time to close gaps without cutting corners, and time to transition with confidence instead of urgency.
AuditCo’s HVA transition services are designed around how transport businesses actually operate. We know the trucks don’t stop moving just because the accreditation scheme is changing, and our engagements are built to work alongside your operation, not against it. Whether you’re a small fleet with a handful of vehicles or a national operator managing HML and PBS combinations across multiple depots, we tailor the transition pathway to your operation’s scale, complexity, and current level of readiness.
Every operator’s starting point is different. Some businesses already run a mature, documented safety system and simply need it restructured to meet the new SMS Standard. Others are relying on informal processes and institutional knowledge that has never been written down. AuditCo meets you where you are, benchmarks your readiness honestly, and builds a practical plan to get you to accreditation, without unnecessary cost or disruption to your operation.
Stay on the road, stay compliant.
